The Translation
Nobody selling dealership software owns a proprietary large language model. The people who own those wear lab coats, publish papers, and spend more on electricity in a quarter than this industry spends on advertising in a year. That isn’t an insult to the vendors. It’s arithmetic.
What a vendor can own is everything around the model: what it receives about your buyer before it speaks. That part is real, it is rare, and almost nobody has it. Which is why the deck says “proprietary model” instead.
The Confession
Page three: “Our own automotive LLM, running on our own infrastructure.”
Page nine: “We’re built for adoption. When a better model ships, you get it.”
Read them together, slowly. Nobody who built their own model promises you the next guy’s. The second sentence is true, which is the problem with the first. In this museum, that is called a confession.
The Question That Settles It
You don’t need to be an engineer to shop this category. Ask every vendor one question:
“What does your AI receive about my buyer, besides my inventory and a personality prompt?”
If the answer is a knowledge bank and a brand voice, you bought a costume. A nice one, maybe. Your colors, your logo, a friendly script. But a costume: take it off the rack and put it on any store in America, same fit.
If the answer is a read on how that buyer has been moving for the last three minutes, you bought a colleague.
What Got Built Instead
The model is the engine, and everyone can buy the engine now. That argument is over, and every vendor who says otherwise is telling you something about their deck, not their product. What cannot be bought off a shelf is what arrives at the engine before a single word is written: what your buyer is doing, what they are seeing, and what they are feeling, read from behavior before they ever type.
One of these is proprietary. It isn’t the model.
